Cheat

    How to Play Cheat

Cheat is a lie-and-call shedding game for 3–8 people 3 is a real table, the usual minimum, and 5+ is a real table — everyone for themselves. You deal one 52 as evenly as it goes, play 1–4 cards face-down claiming the next rank, and anyone may say Cheat. First to empty the hand wins.

This page is kitchen-table Cheat. Also called Bullshit at some tables — CardPractice house name is Cheat. The call word tonight is Cheat. Short enough to deal tonight. This is not President. President is a climb: equal or higher face-up, named seats. This is not Palace. Palace is three down, three up, rest in hand. Not Egyptian Rat Screw (slap). Not Crazy Eights (match suit or rank, 8s wild). Two is not this game. Three is the usual table, not a leftover. Pick it from tonight with 4 players, tonight with 3, or tonight with 5.

    What you need

Sit, pick a dealer, agree on the house

Sit where everyone can reach the center pile. Cut for the first deal, or point at someone. After each hand, the deal moves clockwise.

Say these out loud before the first card:

    1. One 52. Deal the whole pack. No partners. Play 1–4 cards face-down and name the rank that is up. You may lie.
    2. Rank cycle: aces, then twos, then 3s through kings, then wrap to aces. Left of the dealer starts on aces. You do not pick a rank. You claim the next one.
    3. Anyone may say Cheat before the next play. Flip only the cards just played. Lie: that player takes the whole pile. True: the caller takes the pile. Next clockwise starts a new pile on the next rank.
    4. If nobody calls, the pile stays. Next person plays the next rank on top. First to empty the hand — and not get caught on that last play — wins. Not President (climb, named seats). Not Palace (three down, three up). Two is not this game.

    Deal the whole pack

Shuffle the 52. Deal clockwise until the pack is gone, as evenly as it goes. Extras go to the first few. Three: 18, 17, 17. Four: 13 each. Five: 11, 11, 10, 10, 10. Six: 9, 9, 9, 9, 8, 8. Seven: 8, 8, 8, 7, 7, 7, 7. Eight: 7, 7, 7, 7, 6, 6, 6, 6. Look at your own hand. There is no stock in the middle — only an empty table waiting for the first claim.

At eight, still one 52. Hands are small. That is tonight. Two 52s is a huge-table option you do not need for night one.

If someone has the wrong count by more than one extra, throw it in and deal again. Left of the dealer claims aces first.

    Claim the next rank, face-down

Play goes clockwise. On your turn you play 1, 2, 3, or 4 cards face-down onto the center pile and name the rank that is up — three aces, one two, four kings. You never show them unless someone calls.

    TurnYou claim
    First, left of dealerAces
    NextTwos
    Then3s, 4s, 5s … through kings
After kingsWrap to aces and keep going

You may tell the truth. You may lie. You may mix — and a mix is a lie. Every card you just played has to be that rank, or the claim is false. If you have none of the rank, you still play 1–4 and name it. There is no pass tonight.

Four is the cap because one 52 has four of each rank. Do not play five. Do not peek at the pile. Suits do not matter.

Call Cheat, or let the pile sit

After a claim, anyone may say Cheat before the next person plays. First voice gets the call. You may call even if it is not your turn. You may call on someone who just played their last cards.

Flip only the cards just played, not the whole stack. The rest of the pile stays unknown. That is the point.

    Going out

Play your last cards and pause. The table still gets a call.

First empty hand that survives the call wins. You do not keep going for a named last seat. Last with cards is not a title. That is President. You do not have face-down stacks under face-up cards. That is Palace. You do not slap the pile. That is Egyptian Rat Screw.

    Walk through one first-night hand

Three people — a real table, the usual minimum. You are West. East dealt. You speak first.

Aces. You play two cards face-down: two aces. You have one ace and a 9. A lie. Nobody calls. The pile stays.

North claims twos: one two. True. Nobody calls. East claims threes: three threes. You say Cheat. Flip: 3, 3, king. Lie. East takes the whole pile. Next clockwise is you. New pile. You claim fours.

You play one card: one four. True. Nobody calls. North dumps two cards on fives. East plays one six. Around again. You get down to two cards. The rank is nines. You play both: two nines. Pause. Nobody calls. You are out. You win.

If North had called Cheat on those last two, and they were nines, you would still win — North would take the pile. If they were not nines, you would take the pile and keep playing. Nobody wrote on paper. Nobody climbed a face-up 9 with a jack. Nobody slapped.

    Night-one habits

You know enough to deal. Keep this page beside the table. Four people is a tonight pick. Three people is a tonight pick. Five people is a tonight pick. There is no Cheat trainer on CardPractice — this how-to is the product. If you wanted to climb face-up and sit a named seat next hand, that is President. If you wanted three down, three up, and a stock, that is Palace. If you wanted to slap doubles and sandwiches, that is Egyptian Rat Screw. If you wanted match suit or rank and 8s wild, that is Crazy Eights.

    Frequently asked questions

Is Cheat the same as Bullshit?

Yes. That is another table name for the same lie-and-call game. CardPractice house name is Cheat. The call word tonight is Cheat.

    Can three people play Cheat?

Yes. Three is a real table — it is the usual minimum. Deal the whole pack as evenly as it goes. Same rank cycle, same 1–4 face-down, same call. No dummy, no partner, no sitting out. Five is a real table. Two is not this game.

    Is this President?

No. President is a climb: play equal or higher face-up, first out sits President next hand, named seats. Cheat is lie-and-call. Cards go face-down. You claim the next rank in a fixed cycle. Anyone may call Cheat. No named seats. First to empty the hand wins.

What do you play, and what may you lie about?

Each turn you play 1–4 cards face-down and name the rank that is up — three aces. You may tell the truth or lie. If you have none of that rank, you still play 1–4 and name it. A mixed pile is a lie: every card you just played has to match the claim.

What happens when someone calls Cheat?

Flip only the cards just played. If the claim was a lie, that player takes the whole pile. If the claim was true, the caller takes the pile. Then the next person clockwise starts a new pile on the next rank. The punished player does not lose the lead as well — play keeps going around the table.

Do you keep score on paper?

No pad. First to empty the hand — and not get caught if they just played — wins. If you play your last cards and nobody calls, you are out. If they call and you lied, you take the pile and you are back in.

Does CardPractice have a Cheat trainer?

No. This page is the kitchen-table how-to. Open Tonight, pick how many people, and deal.

    Deal it tonight.

No Cheat trainer on this site. Print this page, deal the whole pack, claim the next rank face-down, and play until someone empties the hand — first out that survives the call wins.
