How to Win at Euchre
You win a euchre game by getting to 10 first. The swing is not the pretty march. The swing is the euchre: they named trump, they took two or fewer, you score 2. Stop handing them those 2s.

You win by not giving them the 2
First to 10. Makers get 1 for three tricks, 2 for all five. Fail, and defense gets 2. That 2 is a bigger bite of the race than your 1. A table that never gets euchred beats a table that hunts loners and eats 2s.

Pass the hand that cannot take three
You are betting 1 against 2 when you call. If your five cards cannot take three tricks in that suit, pass. One pretty jack and four side cards is how first-night tables get euchred.
Same five cards are not the same call from every chair. Left of dealer speaks first and has heard nothing. Dealer has heard three passes. The two-round call — order the upcard, or name a different suit — is euchre bidding. Stick the dealer is a house rule, not official. How far the bar slides by chair is euchre by seat.

If you named it and hold three, lead it
Your side named trump. You hold three of it. Lead it. Highest first. That pulls theirs so your off-suit aces cash instead of dying on a leftover 9.
If partner named it, lead trump to help. If they named it, do not. The full lead choice — including a singleton off-ace first — is euchre leading.
On defense, stop them at two
They named it. You need three tricks to euchre them. Stop them at two and you stole the hand.
Lead a cashing off-suit, usually an ace. Do not lead trump from weakness. They wanted that suit led. Save trump to ruff. The rest of the defensive hand is euchre defense.
After two tricks, name what trump is left
There are seven trump once Left hops in. Pause after two tricks and name, to yourself, what is still out. Right, Left, ace — those are part of the same count, not a separate homework assignment.

Go alone for the 4, not the 1
Both bowers and an ace is the picture. Five tricks without partner scores 4. Three or four still scores 1. Fail and they score 2. You go alone for the 4. You do not go alone to show off a 1.

Sitting at 9, take the 1. Do not hunt the 4. That seat is in the barn.
