Euchre

    Euchre Defense

They named trump. You need three tricks. Three is a euchre: 2 points. Same number as their march with partner. You do not need all five. Do not trump partner's ace. Lead through the caller. One trick stops a loner.

The first card after the call lives on euchre leading. This is the rest of the hand from the other side of the table. Calling lives on euchre bidding. First-night rules live on how to play euchre. Replay it on the practice table with every card visible, makers' five cards still up, and hunt three from this seat.

    Three tricks is 2

Makers need three for 1. All five with partner is 2. Fail, and you mark 2 for euchring them. Full chart: euchre scoring. Midwest kitchen tables treat that 2 as the whole point of sitting this side. A pretty off-suit king that dies on their leftover 9 is how the 2 gets away.

One defensive trick is not a euchre. It only stops a march: they still mark 1 instead of 2. Take it when that is all you have. Do not cash it and then donate the next three. Against a loner the math flips: one trick already kills the 4. That loner page is going alone in euchre.

Thin calls euchre. A round-2 next on a lonely same-color jack is often three tricks sitting on your side of the table. They still named it. Play for the 2. Do not lead trump to "see if they have it." They have it. That is why they called.

    Do not trump partner's ace

Partner leads an off-suit ace. It is winning. Play a loser. The ace is already your trick. Dropping a trump on it trades a winner you had for a trump you needed later. Kitchen-table name for that play is eating partner's ace. It is how euchres die.

Same idea if partner leads a boss king after the ace is gone. Do not stomp a trick they are already taking. Save the trump to ruff a suit they cannot stop, or to cover a heart they lead through you.

    Lead through the caller

The caller sits to your left. You lead. They play second. Partner plays after them. That is through the caller. They have to put a card down before partner decides. Duck, and partner can take it. Spend a winner, and they spent it.

From that seat, lead your strongest off-suit. Ace first. A king if the ace already showed. Do not lead trump. They named that suit. The first-card version of that rule is still euchre leading. This page is why that lead sits on this side of the table: partner gets to see the call.

Flip the seat. Caller is on your right, so they play last. Your lead goes through partner and up to them. They see every card. Lead the ace anyway if you have it. Do not lead a queen into that seat "to find out." You just found out they play last.

Seven trump once Left hops. Count them as they hit. Pause after two tricks: counting trump. Why Left is a trump card: euchre bowers. When both bowers are gone, the ace of trump is boss. If you hold it on defense, it is often the third trick.

Stop a loner with one trick

Partner sits. You and the other defender play five cards each against their five. They need all five for 4. One trick leaves them 1. Three tricks is still a euchre: you mark 2. Hunt the one first. Do not play this like a normal make.

Lead your strongest card. Off-suit ace. Right, if you hold it. Sitting on Right "so it stays boss" is how a loner marches: they cash off-suit, you never get the lead, the bower dies in your hand. Bank the stop. The 4 you just killed is the same 4 you do not need when you are in the barn, and the same 4 that ends the match if they sit at 9.

If they ruff your ace, they spent trump and they are void in that suit. Lead something else next. Do not lead that suit again so they can ruff cheaper. When the loner was a gift at all: going alone.

The trump-lead exceptions stay narrow. Both bowers, so the lead is your euchre. Or a loner, and Right is the only winner you will ever cash. A queen of trump led "to see" is still how makers march. What card from this seat on trick one is euchre leading.

    Walk through one euchre

You are South. Partner sits North, across. East dealt, so you sit left of the dealer and lead trick one. West ordered hearts. Hearts are trump. West did not go alone. The caller sits to your left.

    Your five cards:

One small trump. An off-suit ace. Three clubs, void in spades. Lead the ace of diamonds. Through West. Do not lead the 9 of hearts. They named that suit. West has to play before North. If West follows a diamond, North sees it. If West ruffs, they spent a heart on trick one, and you still have the 9 for later.

Say the diamond ace holds. You have one trick. Lead trick two: not the 9 of hearts. A club is fine. Suppose West takes that club and leads a spade. You are void. Ruff it. That is their winner, not partner's. Two tricks. Hunt the third.

Flip who led the spade. North has the ace of spades and leads it. You are still void. Do not drop the 9 of hearts on that ace. Throw a club. If East and West follow, North's ace holds. You just kept the trump that takes the third trick.

The dump: North leads that spade ace, you ruff it because you are void, West overruffs with a 10 of hearts. You ate partner's winner and donated the trump. They make. You had the euchre in your hand.

Flip only the call. Same seats, same five cards, West said hearts, alone. North sits. You need one trick. Lead the ace of diamonds. If it holds, the 4 is dead. If you had held the jack of hearts instead of the 9, lead that jack. Bank Right. Sitting on it is how West cashes two off-suit winners and never gives you the lead.

Flip the score only: they sit at 9, in the barn. Same loner. One trick is the match. Three tricks is 2 you would have liked anyway. Zero tricks is 4 and you walk to the car. Play the one.

Flip who called. Same upcard, you passed, North ordered hearts. You are partner, not a defender. Lead trump. That hand is euchre leading, not this page. This page starts after they already named it.

Replay the diamond ace, the uneaten spade ace, and the loner stop on the practice table with every card visible. Leave West's five cards up and count to three from this side. Why Left is a heart when hearts are trump is still euchre bowers. When they should have passed for next instead of ordering: euchre next. First-night rules: how to play euchre.

    Frequently asked questions

How do you euchre the makers in euchre?

Take three tricks as the defending side. They named trump. If they take fewer than three, you score 2. You do not need all five. Lead an off-suit ace, save trump to ruff, and do not trump partner's ace.

How many tricks do you need to euchre in euchre?

Three. Makers need three for 1 point. If defenders take three, makers have two or fewer, and that is a euchre: 2 to the defending team. One defensive trick only stops a march. Against a loner, one trick already kills the 4.

Should you lead trump on defense in euchre?

No. They named that suit. Leading trump pulls their losers and tells them who is void. Lead an off-suit ace and save trump to ruff. The usual exceptions are a loner you must stop with one trick, or you actually hold both bowers. First card after the call: euchre leading.

Should you trump partner's ace in euchre?

No. If partner leads an off-suit ace and it is winning, play a loser. Ruffing it wastes a trump on a trick you already had. Overruff only if an opponent has already trumped that ace.

What does lead through the caller mean in euchre?

Sit left of the player who named trump, and lead so they play before your partner. They have to commit a card. Partner sees it. If they duck, partner can take it. If they spend a winner, they spent it. Lead your strongest off-suit from that seat, not trump.

How do you stop a loner in euchre?

Take one trick. A loner march is 4. One defensive trick leaves them with 1. Lead your strongest card: an off-suit ace, or Right if you hold it. Do not save winners for a story. When the loner was even a legal call lives on going alone in euchre.

Practice this with all cards visible on CardPractice.

Sit at an open-hand euchre table, leave the makers' cards up, and hunt three tricks from the defending seats. Try the same hand two ways: throw a loser on partner's ace, then ruff it and watch the euchre die. Then keep leading open for the first card after they call.
